The food system is a global network within which are nested national, regional, state and local food systems. We use the term 'Food Systems' to refer to the multiple systems within a given geographic region. Within a community, the local food system would include the supermarkets, restaurants, school lunch programs, congregate meals, farmers markets, ethnic markets, community gardens, backyard gardens plus other farm-to-market connections. We study the food system at this local level attempting to affect family and/or community level change. Our mission is to promote sustainable family and community food systems that help address the needs of limited-resource families.
